Japan-Poland Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On February 28, commencing at 6:30 p.m. for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Radosław Sikorski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, during his visit to Japan as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA), and held a joint press conference afterwards. After that, commencing at 7:20 p.m. for approximately 60 minutes, the two ministers held a working dinner. The overview is as follows. Following the meeting, the two ministers conducted a signing ceremony for the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Strategic Partnership between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Poland for the years 2025-2029.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya welcomed the visit to Japan by Minister Sikorski as a guest of MOFA. Minister Iwaya stated that this year marks the 10th anniversary since elevating the bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, and expressed his intention to welcome the opportunity to revise and sign the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Strategic Partnership on the occasion of Minister Sikorski’s visit to Japan, and expressed his intention to cooperate with Poland, which shares values and principles with Japan and currently holds the EU presidency, towards maintaining and strengthening the free and open international order based on the rule of law.
- Minister Sikorski expressed his gratitude for seeing the Minister Iwaya in person following Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk last November. He also stated that Prime Minister Donald Tusk was planning to visit Japan, and expressed his intention to advance their relationship in a concrete way.
- Minister Iwaya expressed his intention to promote security, economy, and people-to-people and cultural exchange, including legislative exchanges. In particular, as Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan will be held this year, he also expressed his hope to cooperate so that Poland’s participation will serve as a good opportunity to promote its attractivity and strengthen coordination between their industries. Minister Sikorski expressed his expectations for strengthening security cooperation and developing economic relations, including cooperation between companies in both countries. Both sides concurred that they will cooperate to develop bilateral relations.
- Regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which is now in its fourth year since the start, Minister Iwaya stated it is important that the current diplomatic efforts by other countries should lead to an end to the prolonged hostilities and to the realization of a just and lasting peace as soon as possible. Both ministers concurred that the two countries will coordinate on this matter, including Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
- The two ministers also exchanged their views on regional affairs, such as the Indo-Pacific.
