The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published passport statistics of the year 2024

  1. In 2024, the number of passports issued was approximately 3.82 million. Of these, approximately 3.8 million ordinary passports were issued.
  2. The total number of valid passports at the end of year 2024 was approximately 21.64 million
  3. In regard with the online application of passports, introduced in March 2023, the overall usage rate, which includes both the first-time application and the application for the renewal of passports, was approximately 9% in Japan. The rate for the renewal by online application was approximately 31%.
  4. In 2024, the number of reported loss or theft of passport was approximately 30,000. About 80% of those were in Japan.
