Meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs MIYAJI and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Abdulla Khaleel

On February 17, from 3:50 p.m. (10:50 a.m. February 17, local time) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. MIYAJI Takuma, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives during his visit to Muscat, Oman, to attend the 8th Indian Ocean Conference. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. State Minister Miyaji stated that Maldives, which is located at a strategic location in the Indian Ocean, is an important partner for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” and that he would like to further strengthen bilateral relations in a wide range of areas.
  2. Foreign Minister Khaleel expressed his appreciation for Japan's support to date and explained the various issues facing the Maldives, including climate change. In response, State Minister Miyaji stated that Japan has been providing economic cooperation in wide-ranging fields including climate change that suits the needs of the Maldivian people since the independence of the Maldives, and that Japan will continue such cooperation going forward.
  3. The two Ministers concurred to continue to work together, including in the field of maritime security, for the stability and prosperity of the region.
