Meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs Fujii and Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University



On February 5, commencing at 4:20 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. FUJII Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs held a meeting with Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University (UNU). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- State Minister Fujii expressed his gratitude for holding the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network 7th Capital-Level Meeting at the UNU on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UNU, and expressed his hope that the UNU will play an even more important role in various studies for a sustainable future as well as in activities to increase young people's interest in international issues.
- Rector Marwala expressed his appreciation for Japan's support for the UNU and stated that he would like to work on further strengthening cooperation between the UNU and Japan.
- They concurred to further deepen coordination between Japan and the UNU, in addressing global issues in a manner that respects “human dignity” including the promotion of WPS and fostering young people.
United Nations University, the only UN agency headquartered in Japan, with 13 institutes and programmes in 12 countries, commenced its activities in Tokyo in 1975. Its research activities focus on the themes related to urgent global issues of interest to the United Nations and its Member States or topics relevant to the region. In 2010, it established postgraduate programmes, aiming to produce human resources who will be active in UN agencies and other organizations.
The WPS Focal Points Network is a network amongst the UN Member States to promote the WPS commitments through sharing lessons learned and good practices among Member States and regional organizations; as of January 2025, a total of 103 members from 93 countries and 10 regional organizations are the participants. Japan and Norway are the Co-Chair of the Network in 2025 and hold the WPS Focal Points Network 7th Capital-Level Meeting on February 4 and 5 at the UNU.
