Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Iwaya by Nonpartisan Parliamentary Association for Reconsidering Human Rights Diplomacy

On January 17, commencing at 2:15 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from representatives of the Nonpartisan Parliamentary Association for Reconsidering Human Rights Diplomacy (Co-chair FUNAYAMA Yasue, Adviser AISAWA Ichiro, and Adviser KANNO Shiori). The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, the representatives of the Nonpartisan Parliamentary Association for Reconsidering Human Rights Diplomacy handed the “Urgent Request to Prevent Forced Repatriation of Uyghurs detained in Thailand to China” to Minister Iwaya, and conveyed their request on the treatment of Uyghurs in Thailand.
- In response, Minister Iwaya expressed Japan’s serious concern about the human rights situation in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region , and stated that Japan believes it is important that freedom, basic human rights, and rule of law, which are fundamental values of the international community, should be guaranteed in China as well. Minister Iwaya also stated that he intends to make efforts to gather information on this matter, and to have necessary communication with the Government of Thailand.
