State Minister for Foreign Affairs MIYAJI Receives a Courtesy Call from Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency

On January 17, commencing at 6:00 P.M. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. MIYAJI Takuma, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call from five Governors (Ecuador, Indonesia, Belgium, Colombia, India) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who are visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the beginning, State Minister Miyaji welcomed the Governors to Japan. He stated that Japan attaches importance to peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear nonproliferation as a country that supports the NPT and the SDGs. In addition, while introducing Japan’s efforts in the IAEA especially those in the field of the promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, he stated that Japan will continue such efforts which contribute to resolve development issues of IAEA member states in fields such as food, agriculture and medical services. Furthermore, Mr.Miyaji explained the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and the importance of the denuclearization of North Korea, and expressed his hope to continue the close cooperation with the IAEA and its Governors.
- In response, the IAEA Governors expressed their gratitude for the invitation to Japan, stating that they were able to deepen their understanding of Japan’s efforts in areas such as peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear safety. Also, they expressed their hope to continue to strengthen the collaboration with Japan in various issues such as the denuclearization of North Korea in the IAEA.
