Situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
(Statement by Press Secretary KITAMURA Toshihiro)

January 11, 2025
  1. Regarding the presidential elections held in Venezuela on July 28, 2024, questions have been raised about the transparency of the electoral process, including the counting of the votes, from both inside and outside the country. Japan has called for ensuring the transparency of the presidential election process by disclosing all information necessary to support the reliability of the voting results so that the will of all Venezuelans who casted their ballots is respected. It is regrettable that the presidential inauguration ceremony was held, without the Venezuelan government fulfilling their sufficient accountability.
  2. Japan strongly urges that issues in Venezuela be resolved with a broad participation of all parties concerned in Venezuela, including through dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties, and that the democracy be peacefully restored as soon as possible.
  3. In addition, Japan is concerned that the deterioration of the current economic and social conditions in Venezuela is having a seriously impact on the Venezuelan people, particularly those in vulnerable situations, and that the outflow of refugees fleeing Venezuela are causing a region-wide impact including on the neighboring countries.
Based on the principle of human security, Japan will continue to provide assistance to the Venezuelan people including people fleeing Venezuela, will also extend support to neighboring countries affected.
