Third Annual Japan-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue
On 12 December, the third US-Japan Energy Security Dialogue was held in Tokyo, attended by Mr. KATAHIRA Satoshi, Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Mr. KOBAYASHI Izuru, Deputy Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau, MOFA and Mr. KIHARA Shinichi, Director General for Energy and Environmental Policy, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and Mr. Geoffrey PYATT, Assistant Secretary for Energy Security, U.S. Department of State, and others. Another session was also held with the private sector from both the US and Japan.
In this dialogue, Japan and the United States confirmed the need to further deepen cooperation to enhance energy security and energy transitions in the context of various geopolitical risks. In particular, they agreed on the need for cooperation in the field of building diversified and resilient supply chains for critical minerals, LNG and methane emission reduction, clean energy technologies such as clean hydrogen and its derivatives and the use of civilian nuclear power, as well as collaboration in the energy sector in the Indo-Pacific region. They also reaffirmed the importance of continued support for the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, particularly in the power and energy sectors.
In the session with private sectors from both countries, there was an active exchange of views on hydrogen and ammonia, synthetic methane, floating offshore wind and the demand for clean electricity in the digital age.
Japan and the United States issued a joint statement as an outcome of the dialogue.
