Japan-Trinidad and Tobago Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On December 14, commencing at 7:55 p.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Hon. Amery Browne, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, who is visiting Japan to attend the Eighth Japan-CARICOM Ministerial-Level Conference. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya welcomed the visit to Japan by Minister Browne on the occasion of the Eighth Japan-CARICOM Ministerial-Level Conference held on the same day, and expressed pleasure that the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Trinidad and Tobago this year has deepened their relations.
  2. Minister Iwaya noted on Japan’s provision of support over the past decade towards overcoming the vulnerabilities particular to small island states and sustainable development, in line with the three pillars of Japan’s CARICOM policy. In addition, he stated that Japan contributed approximately 2.1 million dollars through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to support the development of disaster prevention systems.
  3. Furthermore, Minister Iwaya requested continued support for Japanese companies operating in Trinidad and Tobago, one of the leading natural gas producers in Latin America and the Caribbean, in order to promote private investment in the country. In response, Minister Browne expressed appreciation for Japan’s cooperation and his expectation for further cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. He stated that his country would like to work with Japan towards promoting Japanese investment.
  4. The two ministers confirmed the further strengthening of Japan-CARICOM relations and Japan-Trinidad and Tobago bilateral relations. The two ministers also shared views on the importance of building up various dialogues and reinforcing relations in order to deepen cooperation not only in bilateral relations but also in the international arena such as the United Nations and nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
