On December 4, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the opening ceremony of the 20th Tokyo-Beijing Forum. The overview is as follows.

  1. Foreign Minister Iwaya attended the opening ceremony, and stated the following.
    1. Both Japan and China have a significant responsibility for the region and the international community, and it is desirable to develop Japan-China relations for many countries and people.
    2. Against this backdrop, the two leaders confirmed the direction of comprehensively promoting a “Mutually Beneficial Relationship Based on Common Strategic Interests” and building “constructive and stable Japan-China relations,” under which the two countries will strengthen communication at all levels.
    3. To further advance Japan-China relations, which have begun to move forward once again, I intend to engage in thorough discussions with Foreign Minister Wang Yi toward resolving outstanding issues and expanding cooperation.
    4. Japan-China relations are founded on exchanges and mutual understanding between their people. I expect that candid exchanges of views at the forum among experts from both countries will yield positive outcomes.
  2. On the Chinese side, Mr. Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of China, participated in the opening ceremony by a video message.
