35th Meeting of the Energy Charter Conference and Adoption of the Modernized text of the Energy Charter Treaty

On 3 December (local time), the 35th Meeting of the Energy Charter Conference was held in Brussels, Belgium. The overview follows.

  1. The Energy Charter Conference is the supreme decision-making body for the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) and it adopted the modernized text of the Treaty, which was agreed following modernization negotiations.
  2. The meeting was attended by H.E. Eng. Amani Al-Azzam, Secretary-General for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, from Jordan, the Chair of the Conference; Mr. AIKAWA Kazutoshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the European Union, and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan; Ms. HIROSE Atsuko, Deputy Secretary-General (Acting Secretary-General) of the Energy Charter Secretariat, attended the meeting. In addition, representatives from each Contracting Parties and Observer countries attended the meeting.
