Adoption of the Draft Resolution on Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons Submitted by Japan to the First Committee of the UN General Assembly
December 3, 2024
- On December 3 (December 2, EST), the Draft Resolution “The Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects,” submitted by Japan together with Colombia and South Africa and co-sponsored by 83 countries, was adopted by consensus in the Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.
- The draft resolution underlines the importance of the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (PoA) and expresses States’ commitment to undertake measures for the effective implementation of the PoA.
- In addition, the draft resolution welcomes the convening of the Fourth Review Conference of the PoA held in June this year and ensures the implementation of the measures contained in the outcome document of the Conference. The draft resolution is therefore important in promoting effective measures to address the issues of small arms and light weapons.
