Meeting between Foreign Minister Iwaya and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Grandi

On November 29, commencing at 11:40 a.m., Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Mr. Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for approximately 20 minutes. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Foreign Minister Iwaya stated that he understands that the role of UNHCR has become even more important as the issue of refugees and displaced persons has become increasingly serious. Minister Iwaya also expressed his intention to cooperate with UNHCR to support people in vulnerable situations from the perspective of human security, which was advocated by former High Commissioner Ms. OGATA Sadako.
- In response, High Commissioner Grandi expressed his congratulation to Foreign Minister Iwaya on the appointment as Minister, his gratitude for Japan’s support to date, and his intention to promote initiatives and support for the implementation of the Humanitarian, Development, and Peace (HDP) Nexus, which Japan is promoting, towards the resolution of the issue of refugees and displaced persons.
- Both sides also exchanged views on matters including advancing assistance for refugees and displaced persons while cooperating with various domestic and international actors, and increasing the number of Japanese staff in UNHCR.
