Japan-Brazil Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On November 5th, commencing at 8:20 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Mauro VIEIRA, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that Brazil has the largest Nikkei community outside Japan and is a Strategic and Global Partner that shares values and principles. He also stated that he would like to further boost the Japan-Brazil relationship. In response, Minister Vieira congratulated Minister Iwaya on his appointment and expressed his desire to further strengthen Japan-Brazil cooperation together with Minister Iwaya.
- Minister Iwaya stated that next year is the “Japan-Brazil Friendship Exchange Year,” which marks the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil and expressed his desire to promote people-to-people exchange and cooperation in the economic area, including MERCOSUR.
- The two Ministers confirmed to promote cooperation in the areas of environment and climate change under “Japan-Brazil Green Partnership Initiative (GPI)” launched by the two leaders in May of this year.
- The two Ministers shared the urgent need for UN reform, including UN Security Council. They also concurred to work closely together for the success of the G20 Rio de Janeiro Summit in November, which Brazil chairs.
