Japan-Malaysia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On October 30, commencing at 5:35 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with H.E. Dato' Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister IWAYA expressed his gratitude for Minister Mohamad's congratulatory message on his appointment as Foreign Minister, and affirmed that bilateral relations between the two countries are steadily progressing under Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and stated that he would like to cooperate closely with Malaysia, which will hold the ASEAN chairmanship next year, in a wide range of areas. In response, Minister Mohamad expressed his expectation to work closely with Minister IWAYA.
- Minister IWAYA stated that through active high-level exchanges, cooperation between the two countries has expanded to security area, and that Japan would like to steadily promote concrete cooperation in maritime safety and OSA (Official Security Assistance), as well as to work closely in economic security area. In response, Minister Mohamad expressed his gratitude for strong economic ties with Japan and stated that he would like to further deepen cooperation in a wide range of areas including security.
- The two Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues including the situation in the East and South China Seas and concurred to continue close coordination, considering that Malaysia will hold the ASEAN chairmanship next year.
