On October 30th, commencing at 11:40 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call by Japan’s members of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC-Japan members). The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, on behalf of the ABAC-Japan members, Dr. SUZUKI Jun (Senior Advisor, Teijin Limited) delivered the ABAC Report to APEC Economic Leaders 2024 to Minister Iwaya. Mr. Fumiya KOKUBU (Chairman of the Board, Marubeni Corporation), Mr. Hiroshi NAKASO (Chairman of the Institute, Daiwa Institute of Research Ltd.) and Dr. Suzuki explained policy recommendations from a business perspective on building the Free Trade Area of the ASIA-Pacific (FTAAP), promoting just, ambitious and realistic energy transition, facilitating data sharing in digital health, and promoting interoperable voluntary carbon markets.
  2. Minister Iwaya expressed his gratitude to the ABAC-Japan members for their contribution to compiling the Report, and stated that at the APEC Ministerial Meeting to be held this November, Japan will deliver its messages on the importance of deepening quality economic partnership in the APEC region and maintaining and strengthening the WTO as the foundation of free trade. Minister Iwaya also stated that Japan will make the most of these recommendations to promote its economic diplomacy through APEC.

  1. ABAC, established in 1995, is the sole official advisory entity of the private sector for the APEC Leaders' consultation. ABAC is comprised of up to three members from each of the 21 economies participating in APEC who are appointed by each economy’s leader.
  2. ABAC is expected to provide advice from a business perspective to APEC leaders and ministers by delivering policy recommendations through the ABAC Report to APEC Economic Leaders towards the APEC Leader’s Summit and holding a Dialogue between ABAC members and APEC leaders in every year during the APEC Leader's week.
