The 16th Japan-Malaysia Vice-Ministerial Consultation

On October 22nd (same day local time), the Japan-Malaysia Vice-Ministerial Consultation were held in Putrajaya, Malaysia, with the participation of Mr. FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan from the Japanese side and Dato'Amran Mohamed Zin, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs of Malaysia from the Malaysian side. This was the first meeting in nine years, following the agreement between the leaders of the two countries last December to reinvigorate these talks. The overview is as follows.

  1. In order to strengthen "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" between the two countries, both sides specifically discussed how to deepen broad-ranging cooperation in the areas such as security, economy, environment, and human resource development.
  2. Both sides exchanged views on a wide range of regional and international issues, including the East and South China Seas, Myanmar, Ukraine, and the situation in the Middle East, the two countries also affirmed that they will further strengthen cooperation in the ASEAN-led framework, considering that Malaysia will hold the ASEAN chairmanship next year.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Mr.FUNAKOSHI also paid courtesy calls on YB Dato'Seri Utama Mohamad Haji Mohamad bin Hasan, Foreign Minister of Malaysia and YM Raja Dato' NushirwanZainal Abidin, Director General of National Security Council, and they agreed to enhance multilayered communication between the two countries.
