Japan-EU Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On October 21, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, High Representative Borrell expressed his congratulations to Minister Iwaya on his appointment as the Foreign Minister. In response, Minister Iwaya conveyed that Japan and the EU are strategic partners that uphold a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and to address together common challenges that the international community is facing. Minister Iwaya expressed his hope to closely cooperate with High Representative Borrell.
- Both sides shared the view that the Japan-EU relationship is stronger than ever and concurred on further deepening cooperation between Japan and the EU on a wide range of areas, including security.
- Both sides shared the recognition that the security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable. They also affirmed that theyclosely cooperate with each other on tackling security situations in Indo-Pacific, Ukraine and situations in the Middle East.
