Japan-Cambodia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On October 21, commencing at 11:00 a.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, had a telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Sok Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya expressed to Deputy Prime Minister Sok Chenda Sophea his desire to work together with Cambodia to contribute to peace and stability in the international community in order to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Sok Chenda Sophea congratulated Minister Iwaya on his appointment, expressed gratitude for Japan’s support for Cambodia, and stated that he would like to work with Minister Iwaya to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in the regional and international arena.
  2. The two ministers discussed bilateral cooperation and agreed to promote “three new cooperation approaches” for Cambodia's sustainable development and co-creation of social values, namely: (1) social infrastructure development, (2) strengthening maritime connectivity, and (3) cooperation in the area of landmines.

    The two ministers also exchanged views on cooperation on democratic development in Cambodia as well as security field.
  3. The two ministers also discussed regional and international affairs, and agreed to work closely together on various regional and international issues.
