Japan-U.K. Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On October 16th, commencing at 4:25 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephone meeting with the Rt Hon David Lammy, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- At the outset, the Secretary Lammy congratulated Minister Iwaya on his appointment. Minister Iwaya, while conveying his gratitude, stated that he would like to further strengthen the relationship with the UK, a Enhanced Global Strategic Partner, in all areas and at all levels.
- The two Ministers shared the recognition that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is inseparable and welcomed the great progress between the two countries being made in meaningful and concrete cooperation to realize a ‘free and open Indo-Pacific’, including the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) and deployment of the UK’s Carrier Strike Group to the Indo Pacific planned for 2025.
- The two Ministers shared the view to further promote economic and people-to-people exchanges between the UK and Japan. They also concurred to continue to work closely together on various issues in the international community, such as the situation in East Asia, Ukraine and the Middle East as well as on tackling climate change.
