Japan-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Meeting

On October 11th, commencing at 10:30 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a telephone meeting with the the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that he would like to promote cooperation between two countries as well as within G7. In response, Minister Joly congratulated Minister Iwaya on his appointment and expressed her desire to further strengthen Japan-Canada cooperation together with Minister Iwaya.
  2. The two Ministers shared the view on the importance of cooperation among like-minded countries in addressing challenges such as the situation in East Asia including the response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue, the situation in the Middle East, and the situation in Ukraine. Minister Iwaya expressed his hopes for strong leadership by Canada as the G7 President next year and his desire to work closely with Minister Joly.
  3. Minister Iwaya welcomed Canada’s increasing engagement in the Indo-Pacific through the formulation of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and the defence policy review, and the two Ministers concurred to steadily promote initiatives based on the "Japan-Canada Action Plan for contributing to a free and open Indo-Pacific region" and to strengthen the strategic partnership.
  4. The Ministers concurred to continue to work together to promote bilateral economic cooperation including on LNG production and EV. Minister Iwaya also expressed his desire to continue working together to maintain and strengthen a free and fair economic order in the Indo-Pacific, including through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), of which Canada is the chair this year.
  5. The two ministers shared the view to hold an in-person foreign ministerial meeting at an early timing.
