The First Meeting of the Dialogue based on the Japan-Canada Memorandum of Cooperation concerning Battery Supply Chains (Overview)

The meeting concerning Battery Supply Chains in Ottawa

On October 9 (same day local time), the first meeting of the Dialogue based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the Department of Industry of Canada, the Department of Natural Resources of Canada and the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada concerning Battery Supply Chains was held in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. The meeting was attended, on the Japanese side, by Mr. NOHARA Satoshi, Director General, Trade and Information Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. MURAKAMI Manabu, Director, Second North America Division, North American Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as officials from both Ministries and the Embassy of Japan in Canada, and on the Canadian side,by Ms. Mary Gregory, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and the Department of Natural Resources.
  2. At this meeting, the participants discussed collaboration between Japan and Canada on battery supply chains since the signing of the MOC last September, exchange of information on policies of the two countries, measures to promote trade and investment, and research and development, among others.
  3. The two countries reaffirmed that they will continue to strengthen their coordination based on the MOC in order to build sustainable and reliable global battery supply chains, from the perspective of carbon neutrality and economic security.

Signed on September 21, 2023 between the Government of Japan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and the Government of Canada (Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Natural Resources and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development) with the aim of establishing sustainable and reliable battery supply chains, from the perspective of carbon neutrality and economic security. Established a dialogue to implement cooperation on battery supply chains.
