Japan-Israel Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On October 9, commencing at 7:00 p.m. (Japan Time) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Israel KATZ, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that Japan is deeply concerned about the current deterioration of the situation in the Middle East, including the attack using ballistic missiles conducted by Iran against Israel, and strongly condemns such escalation. Minister Iwaya also stated that an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is important for diplomatic settlements. Further, Minister Iwaya emphasized that further escalation of the situation would not serve the interest of the region nor the international community, and that every diplomatic effort should be made to avoid further tensions, and strongly urged Israel to exercise restraint. In addition, Minister Iwaya requested cooperation in the protection of Japanese nationals.
  2. On the situation surrounding the Gaza Strip, Minister Iwaya stressed the necessity of realizing a ceasefire and calming down the situation as soon as possible so that the release of hostages and the improvement of the humanitarian situation are achieved. Furthermore, while conveying Japan’s deep concern over the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza, Minister Iwaya called for Israel's maximum cooperation to strengthen humanitarian assistance activities
  3. In response, Minister Katz congratulated Foreign Minister Iwaya on his assumption of office, and explained Israel's position and efforts, and assured cooperation on the protection of Japanese nationals.
  4. Both Ministers concurred on continuing close communication between Japan and Israel.
