Japan-ROK Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talks

On October 4, commencing at 5:50 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, (Japan time), Mr. Iwaya Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, spoke over the phone with H.E. Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The summary of the telephone talks is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that Japan and the ROK are important neighbors which should work together as partners in dealing with various issues in the international community, and that under the leadership of the two leaders he would like to work closely with Minister Cho to further develop Japan-ROK relationship. Minister Cho expressed his congratulations to Minister Iwaya on his assumption of office and his expectation for working closely with Minister Iwaya to further strengthen Japan-ROK relations.
  2. Both ministers concurred that it is important to further deepen mutual understanding between the two countries in order to make the current good relationship between the two countries sustainable, and that they will work to foster an environment which will encourage further exchange between the two countries, seizing the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the Japan-ROK relations next year.
  3. Both ministers also exchanged views on the current situation of serious concern such as dealing with North Korea including the nuclear and missile issues, and concurred on working closely together bilaterally and trilaterally among Japan, the ROK and the U.S. They reaffirmed close cooperation on the abductions issue.
