Japan-Jordan Foreign Minister’s Telephone Talk

On October 3, commencing at 17:20 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone meeting with H. E. Mr. Ayman SAFADI, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that Japan is paying close attention to the situation in the Middle East with great interest and concern, and expressed his serious concern that the deterioration of the situation, including the recent attack by Iran against Israel, could potentially expand into a full-fledged war in the Middle East, and stated his strong condemnation of such escalation. Regarding the situation in Lebanon, Minister Iwaya expressed his serious concern over the ground operation by the Israel Defense Forces and stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. At the same time, Minister Iwaya requested cooperation in the protection of Japanese nationals.
- In response, Minister Safadi congratulated Foreign Minister Iwaya on his assumption of office, and also stated that the situation is extremely tense and it is important to cooperate with Japan, a close and important partner, and shared Minister Iwaya’s view over the current situation. Minister Safadi then explained the latest local situation as well as Jordan’s diplomatic efforts. Minister Safadi also stated that Jordan spares no effort in cooperating to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in case of emergency.
- The two Ministers affirmed the importance of preventing a chains of retaliation and exercising maximum restraint from all parties. At the same time, they confirmed that the two countries will continue to work together in order to prevent further escalation.
