The 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency

The 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be held from September 16 to 20 in Vienna, Austria.
- Dr. UESAKA Mitsuru, Chairperson of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission, and Mr. KAIFU Atsushi, Permanent Representative and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, will attend the General Conference as representatives of the Government of Japan.
- During the General Conference, Chairperson UESAKA will make a statement on Japan’s efforts on peaceful uses of nuclear energy that helps achieving the SDGs, the importance of ensuring the highest standard of nuclear safety, security and safeguards, Japan’s efforts on the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and regional non-proliferation issues including North Korea, among others.
- Taking this opportunity, the representatives of the Government of Japan will hold meetings with participating countries and organizations in the General Conference to exchange opinions on enhancement of cooperation and challenges in the field of nuclear energy.

The IAEA is an international organization (178 Member States – as of August 2024) which was established in 1957 for the purpose of promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy and application of safeguards to prevent the diversion of nuclear energy for military use.
