Japan-Botswana Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 25th, commencing at 4:50 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Hon. Dr. Lemogang KWAPE, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Botswana who is visiting Japan to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa welcomed the broadening scope of cooperation between the two countries, referring to the Children Painting Exchange Programme, which received the Foreign Minister's Commendation. Minister Kamikawa also expressed her expectations that Botswana's participation in the Osaka-Kansai Expo would provide an opportunity for further development of bilateral relations, including economic relations. In response, Minister Kwape expressed his gratitude for Japan’ support to date and welcomed the development of the long-standing friendship between the two countries. Minister Kwape then expressed his appreciation for the acceptance of students from Botswana and his expectations for the promotion of investment from Japan. Minister Kwape also stated that he would like to use the opportunity of the Osaka-Kansai Expo to showcase the attractiveness of Botswana.
  2. The two ministers shared their view to strengthen bilateral ties in areas such as promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for industrial diversification and strengthening mineral resources governance in the Southern African region by utilizing Botswana's knowledge of the effective use of revenues from diamond resources.
  3. The two ministers confirmed that they would further develop Japan-Botswana relations towards TICAD 9 in the coming year.
