Japan-Guinea-Bissau Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 25, commencing at 11:05 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Carlos Pinto Pereira, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau who is visiting Japan to participate in the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that the peace and stability in Guinea-Bissau is also important for the stability in West Africa and expressed her appreciation for the role having been played by Guinea-Bissau for the region’s stability as the Presidency of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) from 2022 to 2023. In response, Minister Pinto Pereira expressed his expectations for revitalizing bilateral relations, including people to people exchanges.
  2. Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan would like to support not only the peace and stability in Guinea-Bissau but also the stability in West Africa. In response, Minister Pinto Pereira stressed the importance of regional cooperation referring to his gratitude for Japan’s support. The two ministers concurred on the importance of strengthening connectivity.
  3. The two ministers confirmed that they would further develop Japan-Guinea-Bissau relations toward TICAD 9 in the coming year.
