Japan-Egypt Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 25, commencing at 1:30 a.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Badr ABDELATTY, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt, who is visiting Japan to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial meeting, following their previous meeting on August 23. The summary of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan is paying close attention to the situation in the Middle East with great interest and concern, given the latest development surrounding Israel and Lebanon. Minister Kamikawa also explained that it is important to avoid further escalation and calm down the situation, and that Japan has been reaching out to all the parties concerned. Minister Kamikawa requested cooperation in protecting Japanese nationals in response to the change of the situation.
- In response, Minister Abdelatty stated that the situation is extremely tense and it is important to cooperate with Japan, as its partner, and he shares the concerns expressed by Minister Kamikawa. Minister Abdelatty then explained Egyptian diplomatic efforts. Minister Abdelatty also stated that Egypt spares no effort in cooperating to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals.
- The two Ministers confirmed that the two countries will continue to work together in order to prevent further escalation.
