Implementation of training program on the operation of large demining machines for the staff of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU)

August 21, 2024

As part of its assistance in mine action, which is an urgent issue in Ukraine, Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), conducted training programs from late July to August to staff members of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) on the operation and maintainance of demining machines Japan provided to Ukraine in July.

  1. In this training program, staff members of SESU worked on acquiring knowledge of basic operation and maintenance of demining machines in Japan, followed by more practical programs on site in Cambodia with support from the Cambodia Mine Action Center (CMAC), which Japan has been providing assistance since the 1990s such as equipment, human resource development, and research and development.
  2. This series of assistance, ranging from the provision of demining machines to capacity-building training for staff members of SESU, aims to provide comprehensive support for addressing mine action in Ukraine, utilizing Japan's expertise accumulated through demining assistance in Cambodia. In support of mine action in Ukraine, Japan will promote the triangular cooperation with Cambodia as a hub, under "Japan-Cambodia Landmine Initiative".
  3. Japan will continue to support and stand by the people of Ukraine who are facing hardship, in collaboration with the international community including the G7 members.
