Attack against school in Gaza
(Statement by Press Secretary KITAMURA Toshihiro)

  1. Japan expresses its deep concern over numerous civilian casualties caused by the Israeli strike on al-Tabeen school in the northern Gaza Strip that took place on August 10 (local time). Japan extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims and their bereaved family members, and also expresses its deepest sympathy to those who were injured.
  2. Japan once again reiterates the importance of the protection of civilians, and urges all parties to act in accordance with international law including international humanitarian law, and to act in good faith based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including ensuring humanitarian assistance.
  3. Japan is seriously concerned that numerous civilians including women and children have been so far affected, as well as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has remained critical. Japan strongly supports the joint statement by the leaders of the United States, Egypt and Qatar issued on August 9, 2024 (August 8, local time) and the efforts made by the three countries. Japan strongly urges all parties concerned to seize this opportunity and steadily work toward the release of all hostages and a sustainable ceasefire.
