Third Meeting of the Advisory Panel on Sustainability of the International Community (Results)

On July 22, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the third meeting of the "Advisory Panel on Sustainability of the International Community" at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA).

  1. At the outset of the meeting, touching upon the significant insights on Japan's sustainable growth presented from the industry at the second meeting, Minister Kamikawa emphasized that a comprehensive framework for the simultaneous realization of growth and sustainability gradually took shape. Minister Kamikawa expressed her intention to foster creative discussions in this third meeting, aiming to broaden the scope to include global trends across various sustainability-related sectors while delineating Japan's strategic direction in these efforts.

Mr. HIBINO Katsuhiko, President of Tokyo University of the Arts, proposed the creation of an " kokoro-no-sangyo" (industry based on humanity) to realize a harmonious society where inclusivity prevails, leaving no one behind, by expanding and developing cultural prescription through arts to address complex social and environmental challenges. Furthermore, referring to the intricate global challenges related to natural resource management, Ms. AOKI Chika, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), delivered an insightful presentation on the imperative of transitioning to a circular economy, which would induce a shift in consumption and production patterns, and on how Japan could contribute to it. Additionally, Mr. KOYAMA Ken, Senior Managing Director and Chief Researcher of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ), developed discussions on the necessity of a strategic energy transition, reconciling the disparity between idealistic goals and the stark realities of the increasingly unpredictable international energy landscape.
  3. Following these presentations, open and candid dialogues on Japan's economic and social vision have been taken place among meeting members.
