Russia’s attacks against Ukraine (Statement by Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko)

July 10, 2024

On July 8 (local time), Russia’s missile attacks across Ukraine including Kyiv caused devastating damage with numerous civilian casualties. The attacks this time hit a pediatric hospital in Kyiv which Japan once had provided assistance by supplying medical equipment in 2001.

We feel strong indignation over the attacks which resulted in tremendous damage to innocent civilians including women and children. Attacks against civilians and civilian objects are in violation of international law and can never be justified. In this regard, we condemn Russia’s attacks in the strongest terms. At the Security Council Briefing on 9 July (local time), many Security Council Members including Japan condemned Russia.

Japan expresses its heartfelt sympathy to the victims, offers its condolences to the bereaved families and expresses its sincere sympathy to the injured. Japan, in continued close coordination with the international community, strongly supports the Government of Ukraine and its people in order to stop Russia’s aggression and achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.
