On May 31, commencing at 6:10 p.m., Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a bilateral meeting (for approximately 30 minutes) and a working dinner (for approximately 70 minutes) with H.E. Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates of the Kingdom of Morocco, during his visit to Japan. The overview is as follows. Following the meeting, the two ministers conducted a signing ceremony for “Memorandum of Cooperation for a Reinforced Partnership”.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa, welcoming Minister Bourita’s visit to Japan, stated that the two countries enjoy historically friendly relations based on the friendship of the Imperial and Royal families. She also expressed her desire to further strengthen bilateral relations as partners who have cooperated on economic and other fronts. In response, Minister Bourita expressed his appreciation for the hospitality of the Japanese government and, expressed his hope that the " Memorandum of Cooperation for a Reinforced Partnership " with Japan as a reliable partner would be an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties in a wide range of fields, including politics and security, the economy including infrastructure and renewable energy, food security.
  2. With regard to the "Western Sahara" issue, Minister Kamikawa, based on Japan’s consistent position, took note of the Moroccan proposal presented on 11 April 2007 to the UN Secretary-General and welcomed serious and credible Moroccan efforts to move the process forward toward a resolution of this issue.
    In response, Minister Bourita welcomed Minister Kamikawa's remarks.
  3. The two ministers exchanged views on regional situations, including the situation in the Middle East, the situation in the Sahel region and coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea, and the situation in East Asia including North Korea, as well as cooperation in the international arena, such as strengthening the functions of the United Nations including Security Council reform, and Women, Peace and Security (WPS). The two ministers also confirmed cooperation under the frameworks of the Japan-Arab Economic Forum and TICAD.
