Japan-U.S. Strategic Diplomacy and Development Dialogue
On May 30th, commencing at 2:40 p.m. (3:40 a.m. on May 31st, Japan time) for approximately 3 hours, Mr. OKANO Masataka, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting Washington D.C., held Japan-U.S. Strategic Diplomacy and Development Dialogue with the Honorable Kurt M. Campbell, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States of America. The overview is as follows.
- During Prime Minister Kishida’s official visit to the U.S in April, Japan and the U.S. confirmed that they have become global partners, whose corporation extends beyond the bilateral relationship and the surrounding region, to uphold and bolster the free and open international order based on the rule of law. Following this outcome, both sides discussed a wide range of topics from a strategic perspective, including how Japan and the United States can address and coordinate for issues facing the two countries and the international community and how both countries can strengthen their engagement with countries of the Global South.
- Both sides reaffirmed that Japan and the U.S. will work together to address issues in the areas of diplomacy and development by effectively utilizing the respective strengths, and concurred in continuing this framework of strategic dialogue.
It was concurred to launch this Dialogue during Prime Minister Kishida’s official visit to the United States in April. The first meeting was held this time.
“To effectively address the myriad challenges outlined above, our global partnership is launching a Deputy Secretary of State/Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs-level dialogue involving our respective aid agencies to align our diplomatic and development efforts globally.”
