The 9th Consular Forum between Japan and the Federative Republic of Brazil

  1. On May 22 local time, the 9th Consular Forum between Japan and the Federative Republic of Brazil was held in Brasilia. It was attended on the Japanese side by officials headed by Mr.IWAMOTO Keiichi, Director-General of the Consular Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and on the Brazilian side by officials headed by Ambassador Leonardo Gorgulho, Secretary of Consular Affairs, Cooperation and Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil.
  2. Holding this Forum was concurred by the two leaders of Japan and Brazil when Prime Minister Kishida visited Brazil this May. At the forum, both sides addressed matters of mutual interests in the consular field and exchanged views including protection of own nationals with the aim of further promoting people-to-people exchanges in the two countries. Specifically, the Japanese side requested cooperation of Brazilian authorities in safety measures for Japanese nationals in Brazil and simplification and expedition of procedures related to their residence. Also, both sides confirmed implementation status of the waiver of short-term stay visa requirements for Brazilian ordinary passport holders introduced from last September and the flexibilization of further acceptance system for fourth-generation of Japanese descent introduced from last December.They also discussed the issues including education for Brazilian children in Japan, consular assistance and international cooperation on criminal justice. They concurred on continuing close coordination between the two countries.
  3. The next Forum will be held in Tokyo and be scheduled through diplomatic channels.
