Exchange of Views between Foreign Minister Kamikawa and the Ambassadors of Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) Countries to Japan

On April 25, commencing at 6:30 p.m. for approximately an hour and forty minutes, as part of outreach diplomacy, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan visited the official residence of the Ambassador of Peru to Japan, and held an exchange of views with the ambassadors and chargées d'affaires of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that as this year marks “the year of Latin America and the Caribbean”, she would like to foster the 'Diplomatic Initiative toward Latin America and the Caribbean', through dialogue with each country, with an emphasis on producing concrete results by making use of the achievements Japan has built up with various countries and regions.
- She also mentioned that she had already talked with various leaders of the region this year and agreed on cooperating on issues of greater importance, such as gender, ocean, climate change, nuclear energy, space, among others. In addition, she expressed her desire to exchange views with the GRULAC ambassadors on specific issues for cooperation under the initiative.
- In response, the GRULAC ambassadors and chargéesd'affaires ad interim praised Minister Kamikawa’s efforts to further strengthen Japan-LAC relations, including the "Diplomatic Initiative toward Latin America and the Caribbean," and made frank opinions on how to materialize the cooperation with Japan.
- In conclusion, Minister Kamikawa expressed her gratitude for the valuable comments and frank exchange of opinions and said that she would like to continue to work closely with the GRULAC ambassadors. The exchange of views ended in a friendly atmosphere.
