Adoption of the United Nations Security Council resolution 2722 condemning the Houthis’ attacks on vessels in the Red Sea
(Statement by Press Secretary KOBAYASHI Maki)
January 11, 2024
- Japan welcomes the adoption of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 2722 on January 10 local time, co-sponsored by Japan and the United States, which condemns the Houthis’ attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and demands that the Houthis immediately cease all such attacks and immediately release the Galaxy Leader, a vessel operated by a Japanese company, and its crew.
- We cannot tolerate any actions that impede the free and safe navigation of vessels, including the "seizure" of a Japan-related vessel by the Houthis, and we firmly condemn such actions. Japan has been working for the early release of the vessel and its crew members, in cooperation with relevant countries.
- Japan strongly urges all parties to act in good faith in accordance with the UNSC resolution 2722. Japan will continue to fulfill its responsibility to secure the rights and freedoms of navigation and take necessary measures, while continuing to closely cooperate with relevant countries.
