Foreign Minister Kamikawa Visits Fukushima Prefecture

On December 19, Ms.KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, visited Fukushima Prefecture. The overview of this visit is as follows.
During the visit, Minister Kamikawa visited Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO)'s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and afterwards in Iwaki City, tasted local seafood, and exchanged views with Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations.

  1. Visit to TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

    In the afternoon of December 19, Minister Kamikawa visited TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station to observed the efforts toward decommissioning, ALPS facility, and the facility for discharging ALPS treated water, and exchanged views with TEPCO’s officials. During the discussion, Minister Kamikawa stated that the visit to the site was meaningful and that the Government of Japan would like to continue to make efforts to engage closely with the IAEA and share information on ALPS treated water based on scientific evidence. In response, TEPCO’s officials stated that they would like the government to continue its efforts to communicate to the international community regarding the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water.

  1. Visit to Iwaki City

    In the evening of the same day, Minister Kamikawa and Mr. UCHIDA Hiroyuki the mayor of Iwaki tasted local seafood at Iwaki Lalamew.

  1. Exchange of views with the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations

    In the evening of the same day, Minister Kamikawa visited Onahama Fish Market and exchanged views with the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations and others, including Mr. NOZAKI Tetsu, chairman of the Association. During the discussion, Minister Kamikawa stated that the Government of Japan, in cooperation with the IAEA, has been taking various opportunities to share information on the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea based on scientific evidence, and that the Government of Japan will continue its effort to enhance the understanding of the international community of the issue. In response, the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations expressed their hope that the government would continue to make various diplomatic efforts in order to deepen international understanding.
