Signing and Exchange of Notes for Official Security Assistance (OSA) to the Republic of Fiji
On December 18, in Suva, H.E. Mr. TANAKA Kenichiro, Chargé d’affaires to the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Fiji and Hon. Filimoni W.R Vosarogo, Acting Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration of the Republic of Fiji signed and exchanged notes for 400 million yen in “Official Security Assistance (OSA)” grant aid.
OSA was established in 2023 as a new cooperation framework for the benefit of armed forces and other related organizations of recipient countries with the aim of deepening our security cooperation with the countries, creating a desirable security environment, and contributing to maintaining and strengthening international peace and security, by enhancing their security and deterrence capabilities through the provision of equipment and supplies as well as assistance for the development of infrastructures.
Fiji is a major power in the Pacific Island countries region that occupies an important place for the peace and stability of Japan and the Indo-Pacific region as well as is a key player in the regional security. It is getting more and more important to improve capabilities for monitoring and surveillance, and disaster relief of Fiji Navy, which plays an important role in the regional security.
This programme enables to provide patrol boats and other related equipment to Fiji Navy which is expected to strengthen its capabilities for monitoring and surveillance, and disaster relief and to contribute to maintenance and enhancement of maritime security in the seas around Fiji and Indo-Pacific region. This programme is to be implemented to operate alongside Australia’s support for maritime security in the Pacific, which enhances the security capabilities of Fiji and other countries in the region.
