Foreign Minister Kamikawa Attends an EU Heads of Missions Meeting to Japan (Meeting of EU and EU Member States Ambassadors)

On December 5, 2023, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended a meeting of 27 ambassadors of European Union (EU) Member States in Tokyo, hosted by His Excellency Mr. Jean-Eric Paquet, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and exchanged views with participants. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the meeting, Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan and the EU are strategic partners that reinforces a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and jointly tackles common challenges to the international society, and that Japan would like to further enhance coordination with the EU and its member states, which Ambassadors concurred upon.
- Furthermore, Minister Kamikawa explained Japan’s diplomatic stance on regional situations such as the situation surrounding the Gaza Strip, the Indo-Pacific, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and expressed her hope to cooperate in the efforts toward the realization of “a world without nuclear weapons” as well as in “Women, Peace, and Security (WPS).” Minister Kamikawa explained the discharge of the ALPS treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the sea.
- Minister Kamikawa and the ambassadors of EU member states and the EU then held a lively and cordial discussions on the Indo-Pacific, Europe, the Arctic, Africa, Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, and other issues.
