The Adoption of the Draft Resolution on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons submitted by Japan in the Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly
December 5, 2023
On December 5 (December 4 local time), the draft resolution entitled “Steps to building a common roadmap towards a world without nuclear weapons”, submitted by Japan, was adopted with the support of 148 countries in the Plenary Meeting of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
- This draft resolution was adopted in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on October 28 (October 27 local time). The Government of Japan, cognizant of the need to present a way forward for realistic and practical measures to achieve a world without nuclear weapons, calls for, inter alia, the implementation of concrete measures related to FMCT (Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty) and enhancement of transparency, taking into account the deliberations at the G7 Hiroshima Summit and the NPT Preparatory Committee held this year. The resolution aims to embody and promote the “Hiroshima Action Plan” proposed by Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio at the 10th NPT Review Conference held in August 2022.
- This year’s draft resolution was adopted with broad support from states including nuclear-weapon-States such as the United States of America and the United Kingdom as well as many non-nuclear-weapon States, against the backdrop of not only widening division within the international community over approaches to nuclear disarmament but also the aggravating security environment. Through this draft resolution, Japan will continue to spare no efforts to enhance the momentum of the international community to achieve a world without nuclear weapons and steadily advance realistic and practical efforts in this regard.
