The 12th Japan-UK Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation

On November 7, 2023, the 12th Japan-UK Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation took place in London, under the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the United Kingdom on co-operation in Science and Technology.
- The Joint Committee was led by Executive Member of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation of the Cabinet Office of Japan, Dr. UEYAMA Takahiro, and by the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Dame Angela MCLEAN, and co-chaired by H.E. Ms. KAJI Misako, Ambassador for Science and Technology Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and Mr. Adam JACKSON, Director for International Research and Innovation, Department for Science, Innovation & Technology of UK. Representatives of the Japanese and the UK governments and agencies were also present.
- During the meeting, both sides discussed the recent developments of national science, technology and innovation policies; research cooperation; innovation and industrial technologies collaboration as well as some stragetic technologies including AI, quantum technology, space and engineering biology.

- The Japan-UK Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement was signed in June 1994. Article 4 stipulates the establishment of a joint committee meeting as an intergovernmental framework to exchange views on scientific and technological policy issues related to the implementation of the agreement and to review the cooperative activities and accomplishments under the agreement.
- Based on this agreement, the joint committee meeting has been held alternately in Japan and UK. The last (11th) meeting was held online in October 2021.
