Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 7th, commencing at 3:00 p.m. for approximately 90 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Foreign Minister’s Meeting with H.E. Dr. Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Foreign Minister Hayashi welcomed Minister Amir Abdollahian’s visit to Japan and stated that Japan has continued cooperation with Iran in fields such as medical, environment and disaster risk reduction, and as a longstanding friend of Iran, intends to continue candid dialogue with Iran. In response, Minister Amir Abdollahian stated that Iran would like to continue and strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Japan.
- The Ministers exchanged frank views on the latest developments surrounding Iran’s nuclear issue. Foreign Minister Hayashi stated that Japan supports the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and is seriously concerned about the expansion of Iran’s nuclear activities, and called on Iran to take constructive measures including the full and unconditional cooperation under the Joint Statement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In response, Minister Amir Abdollahian stated that Iran is pursuing the restoration of the JCPOA through negotiations, and expressed his appreciation for Japan’s diplomatic efforts and stated that Iran seeks to continue close communication with Japan on this matter.
- Foreign Minister Hayashi reiterated Japan’s position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and called on Iran to respond in a constructive manner. The Ministers also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and concurred on continuing close communication.
