The Return of the U.S. to UNESCO (Statement by Foreign Minister HAYASHI Yoshimasa)

  1. Japan welcomes the return of the U.S. to UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) as a member State on July 10 (local time), after completing the necessary procedures.
  2. As the international community faces increasingly urgent issues that require cooperation by overcoming differences in values and conflicts of interest, the role of UNESCO in addressing global issues in the fields of education, science, culture and communication is becoming ever more important.
  3. Against this backdrop, the return of the U.S. to UNESCO not only symbolizes the further strengthening of its engagement with the international community but is also extremely significant in revitalizing and enhancing the effectiveness of activities of UNESCO.
  4. Japan has been making active diplomatic efforts to support the early return of the U.S. to UNESCO. Japan will strengthen its contribution to activities of UNESCO by closely coordinating with like-minded countries, including the U.S.
