Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister HAYASHI by Mr. Guy RYDER, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Policy
On May 31st, commencing at around 4:10 p.m. for approximately twenty minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call by Mr. Guy RYDER, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Policy. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the beginning of the meeting, Minister HAYASHI stated that the launch using ballistic missile technology conducted by North Korea this morning is violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions. Japan and UN shared the view to cooperate each other closely. Minister HAYASHI also expressed his expectations for the leadership of Under-Secretary-General Ryder, stating that Japan would reinforce its efforts in addressing nuclear disarmament, strengthening the functions of the UN, including Security Council reform, and tackling global challenges. In response, Mr. Ryder expressed his admiration for Japan's contribution to the UN. Both sides shared the view to work together to address these issues.
- Minister HAYASHI also stated that he would like to work together to ensure the success of the SDG Summit and other events to be held this year, and that next year's Summit of the Future will contribute to maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law. In response, Mr. Ryder stated that this year's SDG Summit and next year’s Summit of the Future are complementary to each other and that he would like to cooperate for the success of both.
