Joint Communication on the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific (Statement by Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu)

September 16, 2021
  1. On September 16, the European Union (EU) announced the Joint Communication on the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The Government of Japan welcomes the EU’s announcement of their specific measures, together with their strong will, for their engagement in the Indo-Pacific.
  2. In the Joint Communication, there are several references to Japan as a partner country to promote cooperation in various fields. It resonates with Japan’s views and efforts for a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” which I shared at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in January, when I attended for the first time as Foreign Minister of Japan.
  3. Japan and the EU, sharing fundamental values such as freedom, democracy and the rule of law, will continue to further advance concrete cooperation across broad areas including security and defense, economics, regional connectivity, climate change and digital, with a view to realizing FOIP.
