The handling of ALPS-treated Water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (Signing of a Terms of Reference (TOR) with IAEA)

- On 8 July 2021, the Government of Japan signed a Terms of Reference (TOR) on Reviews of Safety Aspects of Handling ALPS-treated Water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Government of Japan attaches importance to the cooperation with the IAEA as a specialized agency in the nuclear field from the viewpoint of ensuring confidence and transparency of the handling of the ALPS treated water.
- The IAEA will plan and implement a programme of cooperation based on the TOR such as reviewing of safety aspects of the ALPS treated water discharge, regulatory control of the water, and marine monitoring associated with the discharge. The contents and outcomes of the cooperation with the IAEA will be made public subsequently.
- The assistance provided by the IAEA under this TOR will be implemented through a task force established within the IAEA Secretariat. The task force includes a group of designated and internationally recognized experts from Member States.
- The Government of Japan will continue to explain about the situation of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and the status of its efforts regarding the discharge of ALPS treated water, to the international community in a transparent manner.
