Agreement in principle on Japan-EU Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement

July 29, 2019
1. Upon the completion of necessary procedures following the seventh round of negotiations held on April 3 and 4 in Tokyo, the representatives of the Government of Japan and the EU reached an agreement in principle on Japan-EU Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA).

2. The BASA aims to enable effective aviation safety oversight by avoiding duplicated inspections by aviation authorities of both Parties through the mutual acceptance of inspection results and certifications, and the cooperation in the aviation safety oversight, thus to reduce the economic burdens on the aircraft operators of Japan and the EU.

3. Both sides will continue to work on necessary procedures such as finalizing all the terms of the Agreement text, aiming for an early signing of the Agreement.
