Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the selection of the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization

- Japan welcomes the selection of H.E. Ambassador Roberto Azevêdo, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the World Trade Organization (WTO), as the next Director-General of the WTO on Wednesday, May 8 in Geneva.
- Japan expects that Ambassador Azevêdo, after taking office as the new Director-General in September based on the consensus of WTO members, will fully exercise his abilities towards resolving issues to be tackled by the WTO. Japan will also continue to address the strengthening of the multilateral trading system centered around the WTO, in cooperation with the next Director-General as well as fellow WTO members.
